LO5: Explain the positive and negative factors influencing
development in the first year of life
One factor that can positively influence a baby's development is that soon after giving birth most
mothers will naturally breast feed their babies but however it is her own choice based on her comfort
level, lifestyle but some health complications such as having HIV/AIDS may force the mother to bottle
feed her baby with expressed breast milk or infant formular. The mother's breastmilk is the best
nutritional choice for infants because it contains all the nutrient required by the baby's growth and
development, breasfed babies have fewer infections and hospitalizations because during breastfeeding,
antibodies and other germ fighting factors pass from a mother to her baby and strengthen the immune
system. This lowers the baby's chances of getting infections such as ear infection, diarrhea, respiratory
infections and meningitis. Breastmilk tends to be more easily digestible and naturally contains vitamin D
which is recommended that all breastfed babies receive vitamin D supplements during the first 2
months and continue until age of 1. Most babies should be fed after every 2 to 4 hours or around 8 to 12
times a day especially around the first month because breastmilk is easy to digest therefore the
newborn baby will always be hungry.
A 23-year-old new mother chooses to breastfeed her first newborn baby for the first six months, both
the mother and baby developed a healthy bond because breastfeeding tends to make the mother and
child feel closer to each other. The baby's immune system was strong and did not develop illnesses
because breasted babies have fewer infections and hospitalizations because during breastfeeding,
antibodies and other germ fighting factors pass from a mother to her baby and strengthen the immune
system. This lowers the baby's chances of getting infections such as ear infection, diarrhea, respiratory
infections and meningitis.
Another factor that positively impacts the development of a baby is showing the baby care and affection
is one of the most important key aspects of creating a lifetime bond with the baby, it allows the baby to
feel secure and the baby will therefore develop a sense of security and bond with the mother which will
also allow the baby to be at ease, settleted allowing them to sleep enough and digest food calmly. This
will create a more stable overall health of the baby, physical, emotional, intellectual and social. During
bonding between the mother and newborn baby, the baby will be able to understand emotions and this
will set them for a stable and healthy relationship with the mother later on in life, it has been proven
that babies who lack attention and care at an early age are most likely to fail in thriving in their later
ages and they tend to have a lower self-esteem ,it has also been proven that babies that were breastfed
have a slightly higher IQS than children who were formula fed. care, love and affection.
One factor that negatively impacts the development of a newborn baby is shelter, the shelter a newborn
should be staying in should be a very safe, warm and comfortable place so that the baby grows and
develops in a good environment that will promote their intellectual, physical and emotional wellbeing. If
such an environment is not provided this can have a detrimental effect on the health and development
of the baby, for example a house that has roof leaks and dampness is not safe for the baby is this could
increase the risk of health problems such as asthma which creates more opportunistic allergies such as
lung problems and even pneumonia. Babies are very vulnerable and most likely to develop these
