Content and Discourse Analysis
What is content and discourse analysis?
'A research method for the subjective interpretation of the content of text data through the
systematic classification process and coding and identifying themes or patterns'
It allows us to quantify data.
'Any qualitative data reduction and sense-making effort that takes a volume of qualitative material
and attempts to identify core consistencies and meanings'
Example : image analysis (used in social media)
Type the keywords 'skinny' and 'muscular' into google, and see what you get.
'Skinny' - women, often highly sexualised
'Muscular' - men, masculinised and sometimes sexualised
Potter refers to it as a 'craft skill', like riding a bike. You could read a book on it, but it doesn’t help
you to ride a bike. You have to get on the bike to learn to ride.
TYPES OF CONTENT ANALYSIS
Categorisation analysis : data reduction technique by means of coding and thematic organisation.
Evaluative of assertion analysis : identifying the meaning of words from three dimensions;
good/bad (evaluative), strong/weak (power) and fast/slow (activity)
Analysis of the utterance: the words as an act, communication as a dynamic process. Concerned
with general statements and phrases: syntactic analysis; logical analysis (arrangement of speech);
and analysis of atypical factors (omissions silences, reptations etc). A single word, such as 'but' can
have an enormous meaning and be incredibly significant.
Analysis of expression : formal aspect of speech and analysis of political discourse.
Analysis of relations: search the relationships that text elements have with each other and the
structural analysis.
INDUCTIVE REASONING - TOP DOWN
DECUCTIVE REASONING - BOTTOM UP
ABDUCTIVE REASONING - LOGICAL INFRENCE
