Introduction
in this part of the essay the author will describe the purpose and application of 3
different kinds of lubricants.
Purpose of using lubricants in mechanical systems
There are many reasons to why lubricants are used in various mechanical systems
and they are the following:
• Reduction of friction
• Reduction of wear
• Heat dissipation or waste of heat
• Prevention of corrosion
Types of lubricants and applications
30-grade mineral oil is basically engine oil used mostly in many different cars. An
increase in temperature will decrease the viscosity of 30-grade mineral oil however:
a decrease in temperature will increase the viscosity of the oil. The advantage of
using this type of oil is that it flows properly at low temperatures with no problems at
all to avoid friction between two metal parts in the engine.
Synthetic oil is nothing more than a high performance engine oil and also used for
engines in various cars and numerous motorbikes. Also, synthetic oil has decent the
so-called mechanical properties at both low and high temperatures. The advantage
of synthetic oil is that it doesn’t thicken during cold temperatures which will help the
engine to start faster and allow for oil pressure to build-up better. The disadvantage
of synthetic oil is that it is not suggested for rotating kind of engines.
Grease, is used in bicycles and motorcycles, very thick and dense, a lot of wax, it is
decent because it stays where you want it to be. Grease is a pseudo plastic fluid,
which, basically means that the viscosity gets affected under shear stress and drops.

, All oils have a grade to show at what rate they flow and for what applications they
are most suitable or appropriate for.
Analysis and Conclusion
Overall, I think that all lubricants are important and should always be used in various
engines so that they perform at a very high level and reducing the possibility of poor
engine performance.

Introduction
In this section of the essay the author will describe the operation and maintenance of
4 different types of lubricant system.
Motorcycle 4-stroke engine
Initially, degradation and contamination in gearbox have a big
impact on the performance of the 4-stroke engine. Moreover,
dirty environment needs to be avoided which stops pressure
building up to the gearbox. Natural leakage, as the engine gets
hot it degrades. Also, the 4-stroke engines are heavier than 2-
stroke engines. Additionally, in a 4-stroke if the oil gets too hot
it can make the engine fail to operate which is a big issue and
should be considered.
Operation
4-stroke engine is basically an internal combustion machine where a single piston
goes up and down four times to complete 4 strokes whilst the so-called crankshaft is
rotating. Also, a stroke means when a piston moves in the y-axis direction along the
cylinder. On every cylinder there is a fuel pump to make the 4-stroke engine function.
Maintenance
The oil can be checked regularly and filter needs to be checked from time to time
and cleaned at the same time to eliminate dirt and contamination, which will affect
the performance of the 4-stroke engine. Also, the pump will have to be maintained
correctly to avoid the operation to fail.
