Understand the Industry – Assignment 1

The Different Hospitality Sectors

Hospitality Services

The services offered by these companies are used by organisations which provide food and
drink for their workers, clients, residents and visitors, such as schools, hospitals and prisons.
Examples of these companies are Aramark and whole school meals.

Event Companies

Services offered by these types of companies include organizing and coordinating events, these
can range from breakfast meetings to the Olympics. Their duties also include choosing the
venue and the catering providers as well as ensuring that the event runs smoothly. Examples of
these companies are plush events and luxury events.

Hotels

Hotels provide accommodation to visitors; hotels can be grouped into three different
categories: budget hotels, bed and breakfasts and one to five star hotels. Hotels can be
classified using the star rating system, whereas budget hotels and bed and breakfasts are rated
differently, using the diamond rating system.

Contract Catering Companies

Money is made by these companies by selling food and drink to other companies. A contract
has to tender in order to run the catering services within an organisation. These companies are
usually used in events such as corporate packages for concerts and sporting events.

Restaurants

The largest part of the hospitality industry is the restaurants, they serve both food and drink
and can be grouped into the four following categories; fast food establishments, cafes and
coffee shops, chain restaurants and fine dining.

Bars/Pubs

Bars and pubs provide alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and in some cases food is served in
pubs. Pubs can be categorized into three different types of ownership; managed houses (owned
by the brewery), tenanted or leased pubs (owned by a brewery, occupied by the license) and
free houses (owned and managed by the licensee – who can serve alcohol from any supplier).
