M3 - Strengths of Support Functions

Chosen Businesses: Holiday Inn & Premier Inn

Human Resources

Otherwise known as ‘HR’, the human resources department is a vital part of any business
including those within the hospitality industry. This is because it is a part of the four support
functions, which are vital to the prosperity and development of the business. This
department carries out tasks such as:

 The recruitment and training processes
 Staff appraisals
 Planning for staff
 Promoting and ensuring that employees have equal opportunities

Holiday Inn

Many people who work in business across the whole of the hospitality industry are believed
to be people who are have has difficulty finding jobs in other fields outside of the hospitality
industry and have therefore settled with a job that they are easily recruited. This can lead to
problems for the business as employees tend to have lower motivation levels, which can
affect customer service. In order to eradicate this problem; when recruiting staff the human

who are passionate about the roles and responsibilities that they have in their job positions
within a business such as Holiday Inn, customer service can be improved. Good customer
service as a result of this can lead to a lot of other benefits for the business such as repeat
customers, good reputation and higher income.

As well as the recruitment process, the training process is also carried out by the human
resources department. Training new employees can cost a business such as Holiday Inn a lot
of money. This is also why the careful selections of employees is necessary as poor selection
can cause a waste of money on training.

Another way to ensure that employees are motivated is to reward staff for the service that
they have provided. Holiday Inn reward staff in a range of ways other than their usual salary
for example they provide employees with dental and health insurance, they also give staff
seasonal bonuses as well as paid holidays. By providing staff with extras and other benefits
they become happier and can mean that you have a more reliable workforce as they will be
motivated to attend work and carry out their jobs properly.
