This is Distinction graded practical and research report for BTEC Applied Science Extended Certificate. This assignment is 26 pages and it fully explains how to carry out titration and use a colorimeter.
Unit 2, Part A: Practical Scientific
Procedures and Techniques
“Undertake Titration & Colorimetry
to Determine the Concentration of
Solutions”
Concentrate on Keeping Up Your
Standards
, Abstract
The aim of this assignment is to skillfully and accurately carrying out the practicals by
making a standardised solution of Sodium Carbonate, and performing the Titration
practical with HCl, carrying out Titration of Unknown Sodium Hydroxide with HCl and
calculating the unknown concentration and values of these practicals. To skillfully
calibrate a pipette, thermometer, weighing balance, and pH metre. To skillfully a
known amount of Copper Sulphate solution and making serial dilutions with known
concentrations and using colorimeter to calculate the absorbance of light in each
different solution of different concentrations. The aim is to show a clear
understanding of the practicals carried out and to accurately evaluate the results.
Introduction
As a newly appointed technical assistant at a large chemical plant and for the
induction period and to progress in the role, the aim is to demonstrate skills in a
range of practical procedures and techniques. It is the part of the role to ensure
equipment is calibrated and equipment and chemicals are safety checked. A key part
of the job will be making and testing standard solutions using titration and colorimetry
procedures. The ability to carry out these techniques skilfully and accurately must be
demonstrated. Evidence of the practical skills, along with the results, calculations,
evaluation of the techniques and possible improvements will need to be submitted in
a report.
, Calibration
Calibrating a Balance:
Equipment:
● Weighing Balance
● Masses
Method:
1. Take a weighing balance and masses that needs to be measured
2. Make sure that the masses are undamaged.
3. Make sure that the balance is on a flat surface by checking the bubble of the
levelling eye. Make sure that the position of the bubble is in the centre of the
circle as this will give the balance the correct conditions for proper
functionality.
4. Turn on the balance and press Tare.
5. From the masses, individually measure the masses of all the masses and
make sure that the balance gives the accurate weight of each mass.
6. If any of the masses gives off a different value than make sure to calibrate the
balance by checking the bubble of the levelling eye and take 3 readings of the
mass to get that exact value.
Calibrating pH Metre:
Equipment:
● pH metre
● Buffer solution of pH4
● Buffer solution of pH7
● Buffer solution of pH8
Method:
1. Take off the cap of the pH metre to expose the electrodes.
2. Rinse of the electrode with deionised water (pH7).
3. Turn on the power button and open the app Sparkvue on a mobile phone.
4. Turn on the bluetooth and connect the device with the app. And select the
option for recording pH. This will automatically record all the readings.
