Case Study: The resignation of
David Blunkett
This is a prime example of a resignation due to the grounds of individual ministerial
responsibility

Who was David Blunkett?
David Blunkett was Home Secretary for the Blair government from June 8th 2001 to
December 15th 2004. He was then Secretary of State for work and pensions from
the 6th May 2005 to 2 November 2005.

Home Secretary (2004)
Blunkett resigned first as Home Secretary in 2004 after allegations emerged in the
press that Blunkett had requested officials to fast-track a visa application for a
nanny employed by his former lover.
A further independent inquiry subsequently found a chain of events linking Blunkett
to a change in the decision on the visa application, however did not find sufficient
evidence that Blunkett had interfered directly on the decision. Press reporting of the
case, linking it to possible phone hacking trial.
