Unit 7 Practical Sport Performance
Own performance analysis

Practical sports 2

It is important that you analyse your own sport performance so you can make a good judgement on
your performance in sport this can also include training sessions this helps identify your strength and
weakness, levels of fitness, areas that work well or may need improvement and what is needed to
improve. Coaches can use it to help them understand their team better and plan games and teams
better, keeping member of the team informed makes everyone feel more prepared. There are 3
common ways to analyse sport. To get the most effective analysis people tend to use SWOT as it
helps show strengths and weakness and can be coach or team led which informs all players.
Subjective performance wheels are also used to analyse a sport performance and with technology
now widely available video analysis is very popular because so much can be analysed including
tackles made in one game by one player etc.

A SWOT is a self analysis that can be completed between a coach and the player or a team who
would usually sit down together to discuss recent performance and the goals of the sports person
and team and what role the player will have. The SWOT is broken down into 4 headings, strength,
weakness, opportunity and threat the first two are internal directly related to the person performing
the sport and what they have some control over the last 2 are external and cannot be controlled by
the sports person this can be a disadvantage although they can discuss and plan for what may
happen, they are only guessing here as they do not control these parts of the analysis. This gives the
coach and player a place to start a discussion, the advantage to SWOT is there is good
communication between the coach and player both will be able to tell each other what they think
about each section of the analysis and will be able to give a clear idea of what each person expects
with a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses. Another advantage is it can help more
self awareness of the sports person with feedback from others like the coach which can give a bigger
picture other the players whole performance.

Strength you can use this effectively to achieve its objective. It also describes what you do well in
your game and shows the benefits. Strength could be either tactical or general skills.

Weakness is a way your tactical or general skills could improve. This is also position specific within
your sport. Weaknesses are in your in your game which you need to improve.

Opportunities things outside the game that can help the team improve and lead to success or things
they can’t control that can have a negative effect in the performance.

Threats are things such as injuries and lack of training opportunities or ability to do a certain skill.
This could stop the athlete from reaching their goal.

Subjective performance wheels are used by the sports person and is information reported
individually and personal to the sports person it can included stress levels or amount of sleep as well
as sports performance such as skills, this is a analysis on opinion or feelings rather than the facts of a
situation during a game. Observation wheels can also be used by other observers such as coaches. I
