Introduction
In this part of my assignment, I will be focusing on the recruitment and selection process of
a chosen business and discuss how it contributes to the success of the business. The
business I have chosen is Asda Stores Ltd.
ASDA Stores Ltd.
Asda is one of Britain’s biggest supermarket retailers. It was founded in Yorkshire in the
1999 and is owned by the US retail giant Wal-Mart since 1965. Asda stores Ltd. sells a range
of products such as food, electronics, home furnishing, toys and clothing. Other than that, it
offers additional services such as ‘Asda Money’.
More than 145,000 people work in Asda, serving more than 18 million customers in stores
every week. There are Asda branches across the UK, including 614 stores and 46 remote
sites. They also have a mobile app available on Android and Apple devices that enables
customers to order online and get their groceries delivered to their home or opt for Click
and Collect. Asda had a revenue of0 £22.92 billion with a profit of £803.2 million as of 2019.
Recruitment and Selection Process
Recruitment and selection process for a business is their way of attracting people to work
from them, their criteria for choosing the most appropriate candidates and then hiring and
inducting them to the business. The process of drawing candidates, shortlisting and
appointing one person for a specific job is called recruitment. Selection on the other hand,
refers to the criteria set by the employer to choose the right candidate out of all the
applicants.
What is workforce planning?
Workforce Planning is a continual process used to align the needs and priorities of
the organization with those of its workforce to ensure it can meet its legislative,
regulatory, service and production requirements and organizational objectives.
Workforce planning involves:
safe staffing: making sure there are enough staff to deliver high-quality care
and support.
, recruitment and retention: ensuring you recruit and retain people with the
right values and skills.
developing your workforce: identifying the skills required now and over time
and developing training to support your workforce.
succession planning: identifying and developing existing staff to fill roles in
the future.
Reasons for Recruitment at Asda
Businesses use workforce planning to know if there is a need to recruit new people. There
are many reasons a business would have to recruit people. The main reasons are mentioned
below:
Growth of Business (Local, National, International)
A business will naturally need more employees if sales are increasing and there are more
customers. This could happen on a local, national or international level depending on the
size of the business. More people would be needed in order to produce more products,
transporting and making them available to customers as well as manage the paperwork that
comes with all the activities of a business. ASDA is a business that operated on a national
level and is always looking for opportunities to grow and therefore needs to hire more
people to facilitate this.
Changing Job Roles
As the technological advances are becoming more and more rapid in every industry, job
roles are changing as well. A great example of this are self-checkouts in supermarkets. ASDA
was a pioneer of this revolution as it was the first supermarket to introduce them in the UK
in 2002. Now, 99% of all ASDA store have self-checkout tills. Even though, they eased the
workload for a lot of employees, self-checkouts didn’t have a massive impact on the number
of employees being fired or recruited. This is because there were still other things to be
done in the workplace, like serving customers, keeping the store clean and stocking shelves.
Systems Change
Nowadays, a lot of people do their grocery shopping online. This phenomenon is becoming
more and more common, especially after the years of covid-19 restrictions. ASDA is up to
date with all these changes, and it offers both pick-up and delivery through its website. This
has resulted in less people needed to help customers in store and more needed behind
screens to regulate online orders.
Filling New Vacancies Created by More Product Development
Expanding the product range and launching new products would require more people to be
recruited to divide the workload. ASDA, apart from being a supermarket and grocery store,
owns a clothing line (George.) as well. Apart from that, they also have a pharmacy in the
bigger branches. In total, they own 255 pharmacies run by qualified professionals. This
means that they need more people with different skills and knowledge to work in every area
of the business.
