SHT 110/1/2 EXAM
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Graham Smith

, 1. ACCORDING TO NEVILLE RICHARDSON HOW SHOULD ETHICS BE UNDERSTOOD IN AFRICA (4)

Richardson explains that ethics in Africa can be approached in two different ways. Ethics in
Africa can first be seen as a factual study of Africa’s moral condition. This approach would
require massive research of phenomena in Africa relating to Africa’s moral state.
African ethics could secondly be approached as a consideration of the methods and ways
through which moral reasoning in Africa takes place. It is an evaluation of the factors that
influence moral decisions. This research would require analysis and explanation of moral
thinking/reasoning found within Africa.

2. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FEMINIST THEOLOGY AND WOMANIST THEOLOGY (4MARKS)

Feminist theology focuses on the fulfilment and meaning of what it means to be a woman.
Feminist theology attempts to challenge traditional approaches to ethical reflection by using
the experiences of women as a starting point to reach definitions and conclusions. Feminist
theology is, therefore, concerned with the specific context of every woman.
Womanist theology is primarily concerned with the survival of women. It takes a more
traditional approach to address the ethical issues of women in general. Thus, womanist
theology looks at general issues and solutions regarding womanist theology to promote the
survival of women.

3. WHAT IS FEMINISM AND WHAT IS FEMINIST THEOLOGY (4)

Feminism is an ideology that is concerned with the historically unjust treatment of women
around the world. It seeks to present justice for all women and it acts as a liberating praxis
founded on the experiences of women.
Feminist theology forms part of this liberating praxis. It attempts to do theology from the
feminist consciousness. Feminist theologians have 5 important principles namely: (1) the
woman’s experience is always the starting point; (2) they reject patriarchal history and
theology; (3) Scripture and tradition are analysed from a woman’s perspective; (4) dualism as
a product of Western thought is rejected; and (5) relationality is presented and emphasised as
the central aspect of all feminist theology.
