INTRO ● The assumption that the meaning of a text is determined mainly by the stated or
implied intentions of the author
● This means that the producers intended meanings are forced into the game

the text because their expectations are denied or subverted - generic contract is
broken

TOMB RAIDER ● Video games market - the majority being male - presented in a fashion that invites
the audience to sexualise her and presents her as an object of the male gaze.
- For the game to be successful to a male-dominated audience, Nintendo has
decided for their female protagonist to appeal to the male gaze.
- Intention of the producers to make a countertype of an empowered woman,
however further allowing the audience to objectify her and reinforcing
hegemonic views, thus appealing to more men to sell the game
