,Introduction to
democracy
, What is democracy?
Democracy refers to the political systems in which people are
involved in decision-making in some way, either directly or
indirectly. The literal translation of democracy iis ‘ruled by the
people’.
Democracy has basic principals:
1. The right to a free and fair vote
2. All votes carry the same weight
3. Majority rules (in event of a disagreement, the most
popular vote wins)
There are two main types of democracy: direct democracy and representative democracy.
Direct democracy is democracy in a literal sense. Individuals express their opinions themselves and directly contribute to decision
making. This is what happened in Ancient Athens (Greece) where citizens (mainly adult males) would vote amongst themselves in
public meetings.
Representative democracy is where electorates (voters) elect representatives who take on decisions on their behalf (politicians).
This is the usual form of democracy used in the modern world. Representatives are chosen through regular, competitive, free and
fair elections. Representatives are to be responsive to voters’ needs and if they are not, they can be voted out during the next
elections.
Both types pf democracy have their advantages and disadvantages.
