Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
Write 300 - 500 words.
When you look at the overall essence of the text given, you can see that it is well formulated and
logically structed, the structure is a little messy and all over the place, but that forces students to
fully engage to look everywhere, you can identify a warmer, a body and a plenary that students will
be able to independently follow in a classroom setting, as many of the activities are catered to
class work. The course book also has a good structure regarding difficulty, starting on the easier
side and gradually getting more difficult throughout the chapter.
If we look at the activities, there is a wide range of different activities that progressively become
more difficult, this is great as it keeps students intrigued and on their toes. The logical structure is
beneficial as each activity builds into the next, the use of practicing, recycling and then reviewing is
beneficial.
The course book clearly focuses on the 4 aspects of language, listening, speaking, reading, and
writing with clear activities to practice all the areas. The part I like is that it has activities to check
the students understanding, such as the correction activity.
If we look at the topics discussed in the book, it seemingly does not focus on grammar,
phonological awareness, syntax, lexis etc. alone. Which advanced students would already be
exposed to and well-versed in. It rather focuses on aspects that would be useful to know for real-
life situations as an advanced student. If we look at topic 1, ‘Global Living’, this shows us what the
chapter would be about and that structure, vocabulary, speaking, reading and grammar rules will
be focused in regard to the topic rather than isolating it, they combine it with specific topics and
jargon. The topic covers the language and vocabulary of globalisations in-depth, and will allow the
students to discover many new words and grant them the ability to have meaningful and
structured conversations on the topic.
The course book includes reading and listening activities which are appropriate in proficiency level,
but also allows for the development of listening skills, reading skills, pronunciation, and elocutions,
this allows students a better learning opportunity to hone their skills. The language level of the
text is appropriate for advanced student, and although it covers potentially controversial topic,
such as ‘Global Living’ it stays neutral and is not culturally offensive allowing for focus on the
language without the debate.
