Election

Gov and PM Labour Wilson

Type Lecture

Quote slides:
- Saying opposite fates for the future of the Labout Party.
- No one expected Labour to lose based on the previous polls.
- WIlson was expected to have a majority of around 120 seats but only gained 97 in the
second election in 1966.

Factors for Wilson’s Loss:
- World Cup Loss
- Conservative Resurgence
- Union Unrest
- A struggling Party Image
- Poor economy

1. World Cup Loss
1970 - England was beat by West Germany, who Britain won against 4 years,
Britain felt like they were beign cheated on
This happened 4 days before the election so people were more bothered about the
World Cup rather than the election themselves, during the election day it also rained
which statistically increases votes for the opposition (usually just marginally but it
still increases).

2. Conservative Strength
The Conservative Party had a new, young and radiant leader - Heath
His campaign was a late spur of the moment
