Introduction to the Course
Interdisciplinary: combining views from academics in art, design, film and theatre, to
present you with a broad sense of approaches and methods in creative research.

Critical thinking involves:

 organising important information
 structuring your thoughts
 considering evidence
 identifying assumptions/questions
 evaluating arguments
 communicating findings

The relationship between criticism and creativity:

 you need to be able to look critically at your own work so that you can improve it
 you need to take into account existing works in order to learn more about the craft
 you can use criticism to gauge the audience you are writing for, as well as the society
you are writing work in
 you can use criticism to produce more honest and self-aware work
 you need to be able to understand how your influences affect your work and how your
audiences will view your work differently
 your work can also have “critical potential” — i.e. you can use your work to criticise
an aspect of society

The three meanings of “critical”:

1. disapproval
2. analysis — i.e. critical judgement
