Week One: Introduction to the course.

Deciphering Secrets.

What is this course?
- This course will analyse, and also look into, Manuscripts of Medieval Europe.
- We will discover how to find these manuscripts, how to understand them, and from there how
to enjoy and appreciate them.
- This class will be focusing on European manuscripts only, and how and what their historical
content is.
- What their content is.
- And what materials were used to how produce them at their time of origin.
- We will be fully investigating the documents, and reviewing how wonderful they are. From
different angles of the document.
Notes: Manuscripts are not just ‘pieces of paper’ or ‘vellum pieces.’ They are information, or
messages from the past to the present. And so, we must investigate this information to understand
their stories, understand why they were telling these stories.

Understanding the stories.

Firstly, you question, what are those messages? As, these stories can cover all sorts of life, and time,
For example,

- These manuscripts could tell us stories of knights.
- Or religious characters
- Ladies of the court, or ladies of the life
- Poverty vs Upper Class life
- Dames

And so, through these (and other) manuscripts those stories that are illuminated.

What is always good to remember, we have been able to appreciate and understand these past times
so much better, because we have these historical manuscripts.
