P3 - Explain ways in which health and care workers support the independence and
wellbeing of older people.

Aids and technology

There are many different physical aids and technological aids that care workers will use to
help to try and support the wellbeing and support the independence of older people.

One of the ways health and care workers support the independence and wellbeing of the
elderly would be a walking stick this gives elderly people their balance back as they can walk
independently as the walking stick will help their balance so they can balance themselves
correctly. A walking stick would also gives reassurance to the elderly person also as it gives
them something to hold onto so they don't fall.

Another aid that health and care workers use to give to the elderly to help give them their
independence is their zimmer frame as this can help give them balance for them to be able to
walk independently and without help. Some elderly people may feel more comfortable using
a zimmer frame rather than a walking stick as it help their balance become more centred and
they can put the the majority of their weight onto the zimmer frame. Zimmer frames can also
be used for people who are recovering from a recent leg or back injury, which could help the
care workers who are helping a elderly person suffering from a hip replacement.

Additionally the elderly may be given a sock aid from a health or care worker. This helps the
elderly to get their socks on and off without them having to bend down and hurt themselves.
A sock aid would also be beneficial to giving the elderly their independence as they it gives
them a chance to dress themselves but will not cause damage to them.

This links to another aid that health and care workers would use to help the independence of
elderly people would be thick handled cutlery. Thick handled cutlery would allow the older
person to eat independently as it will allow them a bigger surface area to grab a hold of.

In addition, one type of physical aid that health and care workers would give to the elderly
would be a button hook as it would help the with their fingers. This device may also benefit
suffers from carpal tunnel syndrome as it helps them to button things up without pain or
discomfort in their fingers. This will support the independence of the elderly person as they
will be able to get dressed on their own without assistance which helps them gain their
independence back.

Finally, one type of aid that is specifically designed to help the elderly with their
independance would be a long handled shoe horn. This would be given to the elderly
individual by a health and social care professional. The long handled shoe horn will stop
