Marian Iszatt-White (2009) = Leadership as emotional labour: the effortful
accomplishment of valuing practices.
 Ongoing professional relationship with those they lead
 Value driven leadership, emotional intelligence, and competency as
a key component in effective leadership.
 Emotional labourer could be required to express or supress emotion
where deemed appropriate in compliance with organisational
expectation
 could be active OR passive
 Not always on the receiving end of emotional agenda
 Does it teach a skill?
 Not always on receiving end of emotional agenda, arguable that this
teaches a skill.
 Could involve:
- Greeting in corridor
- Constructive feedback
 Being valued = capture individualised, positive, emotional response
to praise & recognition of others
 Feeing valued = increase in discretionary effort from employee
 Combination of value congruence & emotional labour provides
opportunity to act out one’s identity
 Emotional labour required to practice deep acting
 Deep acting = something we do to help us feel authentic

Examples author gives of valuing practices observed in educational
leaders:
 Constructive criticism = ppl who want to progress want to
acknowledge both strengths & weaknesses
 One to one encounter = specific individuals’ recognition rather than
whole group
 Personal touches = they wanted to be known as individuals &
valued individually
 Activities to exemplify values = more recognition
 Leaders making themselves available to team
 Authenticity
 Doing it for the good of the students
 Feeling valued = individualised, positive, emotional response to
praise & recognition of others
 Suggests more complex manner where emotional labour is required
to be practiced in education & leadership

How valuing practices differ from other approaches to leadership, like
distributed leadership OR instructional leadership:
 Focus on role of emotional labour in leadership
 Relates to practice of leadership & the complexity of its performance
& its relation to underpinning values.
