Learner Profile:
Alberto is motivated to learn English, however he prefers authentic material and learning

Alberto enjoys traveling, conversing with his English friends, watching films in English
which he would like to understand better, he enjoys music, especially rock music. Alberto
is hoping to find employment in England or another English speaking country in the field
he is qualified for, being that of an Industrial Engineer. In Spain he worked for Renault, an
automotive company.
I keep a copy of Alberto’s needs analysis questionnaire on for each lesson as well as the
materials I plan to use during the lesson/s. I also take notes during each lesson and
explain that I keep a note of errors and points to go over at the end of each lesson with
Alberto.
I have observed while watching Alberto’s interview video clip that he lacks certain English
,vocabulary in order to finish his sentences. In addition thereto, Alberto’s English language
structure is lacking in certain tenses.
For instance, during his video interview he says “quote” “you go to the bed more early”
“unquote” when he explains the differences between England and Spain, and, when he
explains what he did last summer, he mixes up the words when he tries to explain that he
went to the beach last summer. In addition Alberto says “ but in this a student, I good a
student in maths, physics, science subjects”.
Although Alberto knows certain English words, he does not pronounce the letters “J” and
“R” correctly so it is difficult to hear what he is saying like “job” and “physics” for instance.
Overall Alberto is restricted in being able to express himself as much as he would like to in
English and lacks the necessary skills to structure his sentences in the correct order, he
also lacks English vocabulary so he is restricted in that he cannot explain himself in more
detail.
Alberto needs to improve his English in order to find a job in England or to improve his job
in Spain in order to progress in the company.
He likes a funny teacher with good conversation. Alberto’s hobbies are football, watching
movies, listening to music, he likes all types of music, and rock music.
Alberto would like to improve his listening, speaking and pronunciation of English words
in order to communicate better in English.
In class he would like to discuss current affairs, the environment, science and technology,
and finds technical knowledge useful. He also prefers the use of authentic materials.
CV writing, business English, presentation skills, pronunciation and reading are the most
important to Alberto.
Alberto finds the following English skills are essential: grammar, speaking, listening,
writing, study skills, job interview skills, tests, review/revision, error correction and
games. He finds the following skills quite useful: pronunciation, review/revision,
presentation skills, roleplay’s, CV writing skills, and business English.
Alberto’s primary reasons why he would like to learn English is so that he can improve his
English in order to progress in a company, to understand his English friends better in
order to converse with them and to be able to converse in English as he enjoys traveling
to countries where English is spoken and to understand English films when watching
them.
The most important categories for Alberto to learn in English are his speaking,
pronunciation and listening skills.
, Course Rationale: (1054 words)
My rationale on the multi - syllabus type on an intermediate scale that I have chosen for
Alberto will suit Alberto’s requirements according the information provided in his
interview and needs analysis.
My choice of using a multi – syllabus will cover conversational English, correct
pronunciation of English words, new lexical words and wider vocabulary based on lesson
topics such as interview skills, football, the manufacturing work environment and music
together with improved listening and speaking skills. I have structured Alberto’s lessons
using a multi – syllabus to suit his interests in order to keep him motivated to complete
the entire course.
Alberto’s interests and hobbies are football, watching movies, listening to music, current
affairs, the environment and science and technology. Therefore I have focused on his
interests and hobbies when I created lesson plans based on authentic texts for him in
order to ensure that he stays interested and looks forward to each lesson with
enthusiasm to take part therein and to learn through fun activities.
According to Alberto’s personal preference he prefers fun and authentic lesson materials
compared to course book lessons, therefore I have created lesson plan activities based on
authentic texts with homework to suit his preference that cover his interests and hobbies.
The rationale for the lessons I have selected for Alberto’s course cover tenses,
pronunciation, communication, speaking and listening skills, all of which provide the
necessary skills Alberto has asked for and requires in order to speak more fluently and
communicate better in English.
I have selected the following topics which are generally based around Alberto’s interests:
Lesson 1 - Dynamic verses stative verbs, the basic rules and how to use them as well in
order to improve Alberto’s grammar, pronunciation, speaking and listening skills and to
provide Alberto with a better understanding of English tenses. In addition thereto, new
words commonly used concerning the environment and climate change, for example
global warming, the greenhouse effect, ecosystems, fossil fuels, greenhouse gasses,
atmosphere are covered with the intention to build up Alberto’s English vocabulary
concerning the environment which is one of Alberto’s interests.
Lesson 2 – Review of an English film on football. Alberto is interested in films and football.
This lesson aims to improve his communication skills in English and the ability to explain a
story to his friends in English. It also aims to improve Alberto’s understanding of sentence
building, tenses and increasing his vocabulary in English. In the result, Alberto will also be
able to discuss different genre’s of films and provide his opinion’s thereon.
Lesson 3 – Interview skills – Job Interview. This lesson is geared to assist Alberto in being
