Analyse the information in the class summary. What are your learners’ strengths and weaknesses?
(max. 100 words)
According to the class summary the students strengths are in reading and writing, particulary their reading band which
averages on 6.6, while their speaking and listening skills are weaker, both averaging on 5.75 on the class level. The
required IELTS band grade is 7, whereas their average current IELTS band is 6. The statistics on the class summary
current IELTS bands depict that these two areas in general are on the lower scale, and in need of improvement more than
their reading and writing current IELTS bands.
Which two skills have you chosen to teach in this lesson? Why? (minimum 150 words)
In order to assist the students in achieving the required IELTS level band of 7 I choose to work on their weaker bands,
being listening and speaking. The IELTS final grade is weighted between four different skills, listening and speaking being
two of them. Therefore, in order for the students to achieve an overall average band of 7 they all require extra lessons in
their listening and speaking skills, regardless of their current age’s, countries of origin or reasons for wanting to write the
IELTS exam.
In addition thereto, good speaking and listening skills are essential skills required to communicate effectively and efficiently
so that they can understand others, and, in turn, also be understood. The majority of the students are looking to move to
,English speaking countries. In the result, a IELTS level band of 7 for listening and speaking skills are vital in order for them
to achieve their goals to pass their exam.
Which lesson topic have you chosen? Why? (minimum 100 words)
I have chosen a topic on work. (one of the the four topics listed on the assignment instructions sheet).
This topic serves as not only a career in the travel industry, i.e. a career as a travel agent, but also as a client wanting to
make a travel/accommodation booking.
Normally, during a persons working career travel is unavoidable, especially if one comes from a different country in order to
secure employment.
My reason why I chose this topic is due to the fact that the majority of the students in the class plan to make arrangements
to travel to other countries. For instance, Ana wants to become a nurse in the UK, Bilal wants to study in America, Chen
wants to move to Australia, and Mihai wants to do a postgraduate degree in the UK.
So, having considered this, it is obvious that these students may most probably make their own travel arrangements at
some stage during their working career, especially seeing as the majority of the students in the class plan to work in other
countries. In addition thereto, based on the topic of work, a career in the travel industry or tourism industry can open many
doors for foreigners who can also speak English.
It is also common knowledge that this topic can be expected to appear on a IELTS speaking test. In the result I believe that
the students will be equip with the neccessary knowledge in the event they are tested on this topic, and, after attending this
lesson.
