Lateralisation of Brain Function
Idea of two halves of the brain are functionally different and certain mental processes and
behaviours are mainly controlled by 1 hemisphere rather than the other. E.g. language
SPLIT-BRAIN RESEARCH : Studies beginning in the 1960s, involving epileptic people who
had experienced a surgical separation of the hemispheres.
Allowed researchers to investigate the extent to which brain function is lateralized.
2 hemispheres connected through nerve fibres, called the corpus callosum, facilitating
interhemispheric communication. (L AND R TALK)
Sperry and Gazzaniga’s Split-Brain Research
First to investigate hemispheric lateralisation with the use of split-brain patients.
● Aim of their research was to examine the extent to which the two hemispheres are
specialised for certain functions.
● Image/word goes to either visual field (left dominated by right hem/right dominated
by left hem.)
○ When information is presented to 1 hemisphere, patients can’t transfer
information to the other hemisphere as the corpus callosum is cut.
● Multiple tasks, including
○ describe what you see (image presented to one visual field and PP describe it)
○ tactile test (object placed in left/right hand, had to either describe what they
felt, or select a similar object from alternative choices)
○ drawing tasks (presented with a picture in either visual field, and draw it)

We learnt that:
★ Left hem. is
for speech and
language while the
right hem. is for
visual-spatial
processes and facial
recognition
★ Connectivity
is as important as
the operation of
different regions to
perform tasks.
