® ENGLISH GCSE – ROMEO AND JULIET

Friar Lawrence
® The Friar really enables and facilitates most of the action and the
outcomes that happens in the play.
® Although many characters use religious imagery, the Friar is a
representative character of religion. Religion is portrayed as rational
and peaceful but equally the Friar is the cause for the suicides and
that can be arguably down to his selfishness in the sense, he only
married the two in hope of ending the feud and becoming a hero.
This could be Shakespeare representing the dangers to religion if not
kept in check and supported by other scientific beliefs. It could also
show the polluting of religion which occurs when conflict arises.
Elizabethans were very religious and may have interpreted this as a
criticism to them as they are too gullible to believe all this religion
nonsense and they need to be more level headed which may have
caused tension for the audience. It also denotes the unpredictability’s
of religion – it can be good but equally bad and you don’t know
when it will change.

QUALITIES:
Scheming:
® The Friar intentionally marries Romeo and Juliet In hope of ending the
feud. This could be purely because he’s a neutral and wants
everyone to get along and this idea of him being neutral references
how no matter what family you’re a part of you can turn to religion
and God still treats everyone the same. It could also be for the fact
he could be seen as a hero for ending this ‘ancient grudge’ and so
there might be some selfish intent as well. This is the first crucial
decision he makes and is the first mistake beginning the plummet into
the tragedy. He also schemes up giving Juliet a potion and sending
Romeo a letter, but this letter doesn’t get delivered because of the
plague preventing the friar from getting to him showing how death is
suffocating the play and overcoming that sense of love as the bond
between characters are breaking. The sense that the letter doesn’t
get to Romeo could perhaps show how God is also unpredictable
and he may or may not facilitate your needs reflecting Shakespeare’s
didactic message of not completely fooling for religion however we
must remember this play is based around fate killing off 2 people and
ending a feud and so religion still does play a huge roll.
o ‘These violent delights have violent ends’ – Act 2 Scene 6
o ‘To turn your households rancour to pure love’ – Act 2 Scene 3
