Write a narrative account analysing the key
events of the Prague Spring. (1968)
The Czechs hated Russian control, especially their
control of the Czechoslovakian economy which
had resulted in them becoming poor. They
disliked the poor living conditions, for example
their lack of freedom due to the strict censorship
they faced. Romania had just broken free from
Russian control and was improving relations with
the West so some Czechs were led to believe that
the US would help them just as they were helping
Romania. In May 1966 there were various
complaints about the USSR exploiting people.
Workers complained about the poor housing and
farmers complained about the party lines they
had to follow, there was a rising tide of
discontent. The president of Czechoslovakia asked
Brezhnev for help but failed to get any. Soon
