Write a narrative account analysing the key
events of the Cuban Missile Crisis. (1962)
Castro staged a revolution in Cuba, overthrowing
the unpopular leadership of General Batista who
had been under US influence. Castro didn’t like
the poor living conditions in Cuba and wanted to
distance it from the US and move closer to the
USSR. Castro took control of all the railroads and
US controlled things in Cuba. This aggravated
Kennedy who decided to stop the import of
Cuban sugar. Trading Cuban sugar was the basis
of Cuban economy and threatened to collapse it.
Therefore, Castro looked to the USSR for help.
The USSR agreed to buy Cuban sugar and also
provided lots of economic aid to Cuba. This
angered Kennedy who viewed this as a scheme to
