During the cold war, East Germany had really poor
living standards because it was under the control
of the USSR. In West Germany- under the control
of the US, Britan and France- people could find
better jobs, have higher wages, better work
conditions and better housing. People in East
Germany were very dissatisfied with their life
under the Communist system that allowed them
little to no free will and were subject to many
negative aspects such as censorship and being
unable to practise their religion freely. Therefore,
many fled to the West.
