What were the main features of Anglo-Saxon England?

,Earls:

,Earls were the most important aristocrats; the most important after the king. Their
relationship with the king was based on loyalty. They competed to be the one the king
trusted and relied on so that the king would give them rewards and honour. Sometimes
the Earl challenged the king for power.

Theigns:
They were the local lords. There were between 4,000 to 5,000 of them. Thegns were the
aristocracy of the Anglo-Saxon age , its warrior class. They owned over 5 hides of lands
(one hide = 120 acres)

Peasant farmers:
The majority(90%) of Anglo-Saxons were peasant farmers. They worked for themselves
and families by renting farmland. They also did a small amount of work the local lord if
they did not do this they could lose their land. They could sell themselves into slavery if
they had lots of debt.

Slaves:
10% of the Anglo-Saxon population were slaves. They could be bought and sold. They
could be freed but they were treated like property. If they committed crimes, they were
not punished as harshly as others because of their ability to work. The Normans thought
owning slaves was barbaric but this was Anglo saxon culture. They could be freed but
they were treated like property.

To what extent was Edward the Confessor a powerful king?

Edward the confessor was commanding as he had legal power with the ability to make laws,
military power to raise taxes, economical power through large estates as well as taxes and
personal power - religious. We cannot say he is imperious yet as he we don’t know if he is
popular with other people and we don’t know whether or not he is a good leader.

Edward the confessor is no longer commanding but competent as Edward was not a warrior
king as he relied on the Earls and thegns to lead the armies for him as well as he had to
distribute land for support.Although he kept peace and Anglo-Saxons liked a king who could
maintain law and order. Also every boy had an oath to keep loyal to the king at 12.
