P5- Explain the care strategies that can be used to support individuals with each of the
physiological disorders.
What is a care strategy?
A care strategy is a care plan that is put in place to meet the needs of the individual receiving care.
The plan must be reviewed and monitored in order to keep it working. Alterations may be made to
improve the person’s care. Medication and procedures may be put into place so the individual’s
health is maintained and improved. Once the medication or procedure is no longer useful, the
patient may be referred back to their General Practitioner, this is where a new care plan is put into
place to meet the patient’s new needs.
Type of care relevant for cancer patients
Medication
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy may be given to a cancer patient; this may be given in a hospital or
a chemotherapy day unit. This may be given to the patient by a specialised nurse.
Surgery
Surgery may be carried out to removing the cancer, this may be a hysterectomy, this is where the
uterus and womb are removed due to cancer.
Transplants
Stem cell transplant (also called peripheral blood stem cell transplant) is a treatment that attempts
to cure cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
Rehab programmes
Rehabilitation is used to help patients gain strength and independence that that they may have lost
due to cancer or treatment
Type of care relevant for patients with motor neurone disease;
Medication
Riluzole is the only drug to be licenced for the treatment of MND, it is not a cure but it reduces the
symptoms.
Transplants
Transplants are carried out such as;
Neuralstem- Injects nerve stem cells into the spinal cord
Brainstorm- This uses muscle stem cells along with nerve nourishing factors which are
injected into the muscle or spinal cord fluid.
Rehab programmes
Physiotherapy is used to do the following;
Increase muscle strength
Improve postural alignment
Improve balance and mobility
Reduce muscle stiffness, spasms and pain through stretching programmes
Reduce the risk of falls by working on their balance
Increase independence and quality of life
