Type of care relevant for cancer patients
Medication
Cancer drugs may include; chemotherapy, biological therapies, hormone therapies and
bisphosphonates. Opiate pain relief may be necessary when experiencing intense pain, this could be
morphine, tramadol or morphine sulfate.
Surgery
Surgery may be required in order to remove malignant tumours. Surgery may also be required in
bowel cancer patients, for example, when they begin to have issues with bowel functions and the
quality of life is diminished, a stoma surgery may be suggested.
Transplants
Peripheral blood stem cell transplants may be required to treat caners such as myeloma and
leukaemia. Transplants such as lung transplants may be required in patients with lung cancer for
example.
Rehab programmes
Rehab programmes or counselling may be suggested for individuals dealing with cancer in order to
provide emotional and psychological support and to gain strength and independence that may have
been lost during the treatment. It can also help in providing a realistic view and help the individual to
remain positive through treatment.

an individual who is at moderate risk of getting nausea and vomiting may be prescribed a
combination of Palonosetron and Dexamethasone to control the vomiting and nausea. Mouth care is
also extremely important in patients with cancer as they are very liable for oral thrush due to
immuno-suppression (the complete or partial dampening of the immune response). Medication is
also important in a care plan in order to reduce any tumours, alleviate any pain and to prolong the
life of the individual with cancer. Medication can also be used for the relief of symptoms in cancer
treatments and surgeries. The downside of medication as a treatment is that all medications have
potential side effects, for example, the side effects of chemotherapy include nausea and heart
