Vesalius and his work
Before Vesalius
- Dissections were done to prove Galen was right, not to challenge him.
- Galen’s words were read while and assistant did the dissection
Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564)
- Was a Belgium and studied in Paris where he learned Galen’s anatomy
- As a professor of surgery at the university of Padua, Italy and began questioning
Galen’s opinions
The Fabric of the Human Body (1543)
- Was an illustrated and very accurate textbook based on dissections and
observations of the human body
- Corrected Galen’s mistakes because he dissected animals, not humans
- Provided proof of Galen’s mistakes, like that the breastbone only has 3 parts, not

- He did the dissection himself
- Said medical students should learn from dissections
Reaction to Vesalius
- Was criticked for going against Galen
- Had to leave his job in Padua and later became a doctor for the Emporia Charles
V
Vesalius’ contribution to medicine progress in England
- In 1545, Thomas Geminus copied his illustrations and put them in a manual for
barber surgeon, called compendiosa
- He added text from Mandeville’s surgery (1312)
- Compendiosa was very popular in England and 3 editions were published
between 1545 & 1559
