There are some personal reasons why someone doesn’t report a crime. One of them is fear. They
may feel worried about consequences from family and friends or from the offender and their
friends/ group- can make people think if they report, something worse could happen to them if they
find out. Victims of domestic abuse often feel fear around reporting their abuser because of
potential consequences from them.
Another reason is shame and embarrassment. Domestic abuse or rape can also create this feeling
especially if the victim is a man. Men are a lot less likely to report domestic abuse as they don’t want
to admit a woman is abusing him or were put in a vulnerable position, going against their
masculinity.
Disinterest/ not effected are other reasons for unreported crime. This is caused by people not
always caring or feeling upset about a crime so don’t report it as they aren’t interested or because it
doesn’t directly affect them, so they feel it’s someone job to report it. Vandalism is one crime that
most people don’t feel interested in or often effected by because unless it’s damage to their
property, most people would ignore it or just walk past out of disinterest and not report it to the
police as they don’t think they would be interested either.
There are also some social and cultural reasons for unreported crime. There is a lack of knowledge
around reporting crime- knowing what is a crime and how to report one. Online crimes are one
example of a type of crime that goes so unreported but it’s often because things are ever so often
changing online, people don’t know how to report something if they don’t feel its right or feel action
won’t be taken if they do report something.
Lack of media interest and public concern is another reason. The media has a huge impact on what
people are made aware of and can have both positive and negative effects as on tv for example they
are much more likely to talk about murder cases for example, things that they feel the wider public
are interested in whereas social media will talk and spread awareness of thing like domestic abuse.
An example of how important the media is, is the #MeToo campaign. The use of the hashtag
encouraged so many people to come out and report to the police about sexual abuse and
harassment.
Another reason is culture-bound crime. In some culture’s and religions, the crimes are acceptable as
they follow traditions within their life, however these crimes can include honour killing, forced
marriage and female genital mutilation which are all illegal things. The reason they go so unreported
is because people outside the cultures and religions often don’t understand so don’t say anything or
don’t want to interfere, so not to look racist or discriminative, but also people in those parts of
society wont report themselves as it can include their families and what their communities see as
‘acceptable’ or ‘normal’.
