Unit 9 P1 M1 D1 Principles and values in health and social care Megan Scully
P1: Explain how the application of relevant principles and values will enable professionals to
provide holistic support for individuals who use social services.
Empowerment
Empowerment includes providing vulnerable individuals with the right to form their own decisions
regarding their personal care plan. This is enforced by ensuring that no decisions are formed without
the individual being aware, and individuals are provided with knowledge to ensure they are capable
of forming informed decisions that are in their best interest. Care providers can, however, intervene
if they believe and can prove the individual’s absence of the mental capacity to form their own
decisions, for example, in an individual with a severe mental health condition such as dementia. This
allows for professionals to deliver holistic support through the confirmation that care professionals
are consistently considering the care of all individuals. In this situation, holistic support is composed
through the consideration of the individuals emotional and physical requirements as the
professional is identifying the additional needs, likes and desires of the individual and how this
affects them.
Promotion of choice
The promotion of choice is providing individuals with the freedom to form specific decisions
regarding their treatment and care, provided by a professional. This could be, for example, an
individual being able to choose the gender of medical professional they wish to see, or having a
choice of residential care home if required. The promotion of choice enables healthcare
professionals to deliver holistic support through identifying the emotional requirements of the
individual and what makes the individual relaxed and willing regarding the decision making of their
care plan. If the emotions of the individual are considered, the individual will feel much happier and
valued.
Promotion of rights
The promotion of rights is ensuring that individuals are treated justly and equivalently by all
healthcare professionals, this is enforced through the provision of basic human rights to all
individuals. This includes; the right to be heard, the right to not be maltreated, the right to food,
water, shelter and clothing and the right to be treated as an individual and to be respected. This
enables healthcare professionals to deliver holistic support through providing individuals with these
fundamental requirements. Physically, this provides respect as the individuals are being treated
correctly. Intellectually, allowing the individuals freedom of speech. Emotionally, they are being
provided with dignity when they are clothed and spiritually, they are respected regardless of their
beliefs.
Recognition of preferences
The recognition of preferences is when healthcare professionals acknowledge the desires of the
individual, including; what the individual prefers to eat, wear and do, how the individual prefers to
communicate and where the individual prefers to reside. For example, if an individual favoured
eating their meals privately, then this must be met if able. To make individual feel comfortable
within their new environment, healthcare professionals would try to accommodate this and
supervise. This enables healthcare professionals to deliver holistic support by identifying the
individual’s emotional requirements and preferences and how fulfilling these requirements and
preferences will affect the individual. This allows for individual to receive treatment they are
comfortable with and allows for the individual to be much happier.
Involvement of individuals in care plan
The involvement of the individuals care plan includes the views of the individual, feelings and
opinions. For example, an individual may be uncomfortable with leaving their home environment
