P1- Explain how the application of relevant principles and values will enable professionals to
provide holistic support for individuals who use social services.
Empowerment
Vulnerable individuals should be provided with empowerment, this means that they should be able
to make their own decisions when it comes to their personal care plan. To enforce this, the
individual should be informed before a decision is made, this way, they can show that they are
capable of making their own decisions. However, care providers and intervene with the individual’s
decision if it is proven that the individual has limited mental capacity, this may be if they have
dementia. This is done as it allows professionals to deliver care by applying a holistic support, this
includes the individuals;
Emotional needs
Physical needs
Spiritual needs
Desires

Dislikes
By looking at each if these, it shows that the care if the individual is always put first.
Promotion of choice
Everyone in receiving care has the right to have an input regarding their care that is provided by a
specialist. The patient may be given the choice regarding the gender of the health professional who
is treating them. By giving the patient a choice, it allows them to be cared for in a holistic way, this
will identify any emotional needs that the individual may have. This will allow the patient to remain
relaxed and more likely to want to make a decision regarding their care.
Promotion of rights
The individual must be treated fairly and equally by all staff members, this is due to the basic human
rights that each person has. The human rights include;
The right to be heard
The right to not be maltreated
The right to food
The right to water
The right to shelter
The right to clothing
The right to be treated as an individual
The right to be respected
Each of these allow health professionals to deliver care in a holistic way as each individual will be
provided with all of these requirements. This will benefit the patient physically as they will not suffer
any injuries or maltreatment. The freedom of speech will allow the individual to remain intellectual.
The patient’s dignity is being preserved when they are provided clothes, as well as keeping their
spirits high. They are respected by every member of staff no matter what their beliefs are.
Recognition of preferences
It must be clear what the patient’s preferences are, this includes things such as;
What the individual would like to eat
What they would like to wear
Where they would like to go
What they would like to do
the individuals will feel comfortable and respected if each of these are met. It also allows health care
professionals to identify the patient’s needs, such as their emotional requirements. They will look at
