Unit 20: Understanding Mental Wellbeing

Learning Aim B

P2/ P3

Bipolar disorder/ Schizophrenia

This disorder affects the intellectual aspects, which leads to several outcomes. This mental disorder
affects the individual’s psychological behaviour, such as extreme mood swings, this can be either due
to prior being in depression or currently dealing with depression. For example, an individual may be
in a gathering, happy and enjoying but suddenly may turn into completely opposite personality, such
as manic or depressive, manic means one may extremely react such as become extremely
aggressive, may shout, break things even. Depressive can be a slower reaction such as they do not
react anything extreme and just may want to stay alone. This disorder is usually named as a sudden
mood opposition. The symptom of manic stage and its characteristics is when the individual would
experience aspects like being restless, extreme happiness/anger and excitement, one may panic and
start to speak very fast and may get confused, due to this they may not be able to focus on anything,
they may get extremely energetic, may not feel to sleep (can also be insomniac), due to these
symptoms ones characteristics can be such as sudden angry/happy, which can lead to aspects like
they may even break things, or start to celebrate anything. The depressive mode can represent
symptoms that are opposite to manic phase, as in this phase there energy is lower, they may sleep
more, may stay sad, feel guilty for the anything they have done, may not feel interested to conduct
anything, it can also impact on physical health such as weight loss/gain, as they may eat excessively
or very less. They may get irritated by the people around them, such as may want to be alone, there
cognitive thoughts can be dangerous for them, such as they may get thoughts like harm themselves
with knife, suicidal thoughts or some may go extreme and can actually attempt. Through these
symptoms and characteristics one can harm themselves or someone near them as well, as they
would not have control over their intellectual and emotions.

It is stated that schizophrenia disorder is known as to be a complicated and unorganised thoughts, it
is essentially caused by the psychosis. Psychosis is a situation where the individual would face
disconnection with the real life such as the people around one. Such as they may start to interpret
outcomes such as hallucinations, delusions, and thinking. It can affect people differently, such as
there can be people who may face this for long-term or for a short period of time, such as due to life
events. Such as this disorders may make the individuals life in trouble, such as random attacks, which
would include tiredness, being frightened, scared, harm themselves, confused personality, and it
may also casus the individual to lack trust, also the behaviour may fluctuate such as suddenly may
get scared, think something that may be harming, think regarding something which can be
paranoids. The symptom of this disorder includes lack of interest/concentration, ones may not have
control over their emotions, socially isolated, hallucinations which includes hearing/seeing anything
which may be unusual. Delusions which mean that they may not want to share to someone else.
Such as spiritual belief. Some may even lack confidence and self-esteem. For example, the individual
with this disorder may not believe the individual with them, they may start to make assumptions on
them and may perceive them as a good or bad individual with the regards of their thinking that is
caused by the disorder. They may even start to assume themselves into different places while being
in one place. They may even assume themselves in different generations or time zone, such as in
their past experiences. Some individuals may also face lack of energy to carry daily activities, such as

, getting ready, or cooking etc. they may also believe that people are reading their minds.
Professionals states this disorder as positive and negative symptom. Positives are the symptoms that
are the experiences that contributes to one’s life. Such as starts to speak to self, as they may be
thinking or seeing things that can be unviewable for others. They may start to act odd and may tell
people about them seeing things such as random people talking to them. Negative symptoms are
the facts that takes the life aspects away. Such as less enjoying, socially isolated, lack of confidence
and self-esteem, less interests in daily life activities, lack of physical activities. Professionals believe
that it can be complicated to diagnose this disorder, as there are people who usually do not openly
represents the symptoms, such as they may experience but would fear to discuss with others. The
research believes that it can be multiple conditions which combines one and causes this disorder to
the individual. To be able to effectively diagnose this, the professionals promote people to contact
them, so they can deeply examine and understand their symptoms which would then lead to its
diagnoses and then the treatment plan. It usually affects individuals from the age 18 to 35 but that
does not mean it would not affect anyone else, it can. It is shown that more black individuals face
this disorder, it can be because of their life experiences, such as they may face discrimination and
racism in the UK. They may get this disorder more due to being stressed such as they would change
countries, they may find it difficult to adjust into a different country. The professionals may have
cultural discrimination, such as they may differentiate between the black and white individual even
when they may have same symptoms, this may assume things such as they would have this because
of their race. Even when such as the individual may not have that disorder. Through this the
individual may have to face with treatments that are not even appropriate, because the
professionals have diagnosed them due to their race and its likelihood.

DSM (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders) and ICD (International classification of
diseases) are the classification systems which describes the mental/psychological disorders and
conditions, it also emphasises the correct treatment it needs, such as firstly it may help to diagnose
the disorder such as through identifying the symptoms, but it can be difficult for the professionals to
diagnose, as there are people who may not show the signs and characteristics. This classification
system identifies and discuss about three stages of disorders, such as manic, depressive, and
hypomanic. There are 5 editions of this system, such as the current edition is DSM-5. In this edition,
the DSM has stated that there are certainly two parts of bipolar, which is known as bipolar l and
bipolar ll, this can be invented due to the severity of the condition, such as it may impact differently
on people. The bipolar l refers to the one episode of representing manic, this phase is when the
individual represents extreme level of being energetic, may start to be hyperactive, get aggressive,
irritated mood when one may even try to hurt another as they may not like their presence. It may
also require admission to the hospital, this is because their thoughts and intellectual may have an
episode of suicidal thoughts as well. Which represents danger to themselves and another life.
Bipolar ll occurs when the depressive mode appears, that represents characteristics such as less
energy, calmer than in the first phase. This system characterisation towards bipolar eases the
understanding of diagnosing the disorders, as it explains both phases and its symptom, through it
can be easier for the families and professionals to recognize. This system provides framework to the
professionals that eases their research towards bipolar, this succours the professionals to effectively
acknowledge the treatment for the disorder. This system research regarding the disorder supports
the psychological professionals such as psychologists and psychiatrist to instantly look through the
current treatment, as this system changes over the time according to the new inventions, such as
the scientists may research over time about how people have behaviour has changed within couple
years, to compare, for example, the researcher stated (5 years ago as an example) that bipolar
behaviour has changed over the time, which resulted in the changes of it treatment and diagnosing
