Unit 17- Assignment 2: Investigate the concept of person-centred care for people who
have dementia to maintain quality of life and wellbeing.

P5: Explain how person-centred care is applied for one individual who has one type of
dementia.

The aim of person-centred care is to maintain the wellness and quality of life of people with
dementia by utilising a holistic and integrative approach in which health and care professionals
collaborate with people who use their services. This is due to the fact that it's crucial to recognise
a dementia patient's individuality, particularly given the fact that no two dementia patients will
experience their condition in the same way. As a result, each patient's unique needs must be
met, and they should not be treated like someone who just has a cold.

Respect, dignity, and privacy are all essential components of providing care, and carers must be
aware of the requirements of people with dementia. An individual is considerably more likely to
experience abuse or neglect when they are in the later stages of dementia because their
symptoms are worsened and they will not be aware if their treatment is faulty or complain about
it. For instance, they could impose decisions rather than letting the person participate in the
process.

Mrs Johal Kaur has many different needs that need to be taken into consideration by the staff at
the Ashfold residence and some of these come as a result of her Alzheimer’s. As she is a
practising Sikh whose religious practices are very important to her, this needs to be taken into
consideration. So ensuring she is able to access the Gurdwara every week, encouraging her to
take part in activities relating to religious festivals and making sure that she receives a diet that
not only fits her cultural requirements but also her nutritional needs is a vital factor to creating her
care plan. The staff was able to create a diet plan for Mrs. Johal Kaur using a person-centred
approach because the family informed them of her dietary preferences and diabetes during the
meetings. Without this information, a predetermined meal plan would have been chosen for her
without taking into account her needs.

The staff will also need to ensure that they have carried out a risk assessment of all areas that
Mrs Johal Kaur goes as she has been known to wander off without telling anyone and feeling lost
in areas that should be familiar to her. This may be a result of her husband passing away and so
the residence staff will need to help remind her that he has passed away but also ensure that
does not get upset when told. They might be able to help with this by making sure she can talk to
her family every day, whether through in-person visits or by setting up a tablet so she can video
chat with at least one member of her family so she can talk to someone she knows. She would
also find it helpful to be able to talk about her background, particularly her time working as a
teacher, with a few of the other residents who she trusts and gets along with. This can assist her
in maintaining her social and cognitive abilities, which can help stop her health from rapidly
deteriorating.

To ensure that the care being provided is advantageous for Mrs. Johal Kaur and is as centred on
her requirements as possible, it is crucial that she be included in the development of the care
plan. Additionally, it is crucial that the staff give her the confidence she needs to speak up if she
disagrees with something about the plan or her surroundings. In an effort to make Mrs. Johal
Kaur feels more at home, as she is unhappy about leaving her family home. They can give her

, CD players and pictures so that she feels more comfortable and is able to settle in better to her
new home. They will also need to make sure that they safeguard Mrs. Johal Kaur so that she is
kept safe within the residence. They can do this by making sure she has someone with her at all
times so that she is less able to run away or get lost within the facility and making sure her son
can see her at all times when out of the residence to further ensure she doesn't get lost.

P6: Explain why a flexible approach is needed when planning care for one individual who
has one type of dementia.

Making a care plan for any individual, but especially for those who have a form of dementia as
they cannot be treated the same as any other service user, requires a flexible approach. This
covers meals, the hours they wake up and go to bed, and the activities they engage in. Planning
care for a person with dementia requires flexibility because some days may be better than
others. They are generally in a good mood, willing to participate in activities of daily living such as
eating meals, taking their medications, and interacting with staff and other residents. Then, the
following day, they can be acting out and be perceived as "acting out" by doing the exact
opposite. When developing a plan for a person with dementia, staff members need to keep this in
mind, and they also need to have a strategy in place for how to handle this if it does occur. (1.
Collins dictionary).

By having a flexible response it can allow the individual's needs to reassess and planned so that
there needs are met and it can be changed to allow this support to happen such as if they were ill on
the day they were meant to go to church the plans can change so that she could potentially practise
her religion at home. (3. alzheimers). However, having a member of staff watching her at all times
can be intimidating and she may feel like she has no privacy so therefore she may feel like she
cannot escape and may get anxious. The staff should then take this into consideration and allow her
to be by herself however have someone watching her from a distance so that they can still see her
and she has independence and privacy.

When preparing meals for Mrs. Johal Kaur, it is important to include her in the process and to be
flexible in order to account for the fundamental tenets of her faith. She can choose from a limited
number of possibilities which dish she wants to eat or assist in making if they explore various
dishes that they can either create themselves or that she can help prepare. She should be
encouraged by the staff to participate in food preparation because doing so during the Diwali
celebrations gave her more confidence because she was able to express herself and share her
culture with the other residents. She might also miss doing it because it was something she was
accustomed to doing when she lived with her family and therefore will make her feel safe and
comfortable within the residence.

Mrs. Johal Kaur will want to act in ways that adhere to her religion's standards because doing so
is a part of her religious culture. The staff must allow her to do this in order to make her feel
supported and free to express herself. This may entail putting on a long Punjabi scarf to cover
her hair, donning the five articles of faith, taking a shower rather than a bath, and being permitted
to brush her teeth before eating. The staff must give her the confidence to engage in these
activities without fear of ridicule from other residents or even staff members. (2. sikh). The
employees at the house must also be accommodating in setting up a space where Mrs. Johal
