Introduction:
This assignment is on the musculoskeletal system and the different functions of the different
organs involved in this. The musculoskeletal system provides form, support, stability, and
movement to the body. The musculoskeletal system is made u p of bones of the skeleton, muscles,
cartilage, tendon, ligament, joints and other connective tissue that supports and binds it together .
There are four main organs of the skeletal system:
Bones: A rigid form of connective tissue that is part of the skeletal system of vertebrates and is
composed principally of calcium.
Cartilage: Also, a form of connective tissue but is not as tough and rigid as bone .
Ligaments: A short band of tough, flexible fibrous connective tissue which connects two bones or
cartilages or holds together a joint.
Tendons: A flexible but inelastic cord of strong fibrous collagen tissue attaching a muscle to a bone .
In this following assigment I will be explaining these and other organs in the musculoskeletal in
more detail their structure and their functions.
Diagram Of Musculoskeletal system:
, Function of Skeletal System:
The skeletal system is the bones and the other connective tissue which protects and su pports the
body tissues and internal organs. In shorter terms the framework of the body. The skeletal system
gives the body shape and form and helps to both protect and support the entire organism . Bone,
cartilage, tendons, joints, ligaments and other connective tissues compose the skeletal system .
Lastly, the two main types of bone tissue are compact which is hard and dense and cancellous
which is spongy and flexible tissue.
Joints: A site where two or more bones or other skeletal components are joined together .
Bones: A rigid form of connective tissue that is part of the skeletal system of vertebrates and is
composed principally of calcium.
Bones are a major component of the skeletal system. The bones that make u p the human skeletal
system is divided into 2 groups which is Axial Bones and Appendicular Skeletal Bones.
The Axial Skeleton includes bones of the skull, hyoid, vertebral column and thoracic cage. Which
will be explained in more detail further down. The Axial skeleton protects many vital organs and
soft tissues of the body, for instance the skull, it provides protection for the brain, the vertebral
column protects the spinal cord and the thoracic cage protects the heart and lungs .
Skull: This includes bones of the cranium, face and ears. The function of the skull is to protect the
brain from injury.
Hyoid: This is the U-shaped bones or complex of bones located in the neck bet ween the chin and
voice-box otherwise known as the larynx. The function of the Hyoid is to serve as an anchoring
structure for the tongue.
Vertebral Column: This includes spinal vertebrae. The function of the vertebral column is
protection of the spinal cord.
Thoracic cage: Includes ribs and breastbone the long flat bone in the middle of your ribcage
otherwise known as a sternum. The function of this cage is to protect the heart and lungs from
injury.
The Appendicular Skeleton is composed of body limbs and structures that attach limbs to the a xial
skeleton. The primary function of the appendicular skeleton is for bodily movement, it also
provides protection for organs of the digestive system, excretory system and reproductive system .
Pectoral girdle: This includes shoulder bones (clavicle and scapula). The function of the Pectoral
girdle is it supports your shoulder and encourages a full range of motion and protects your nerves
and blood vessels that pass between the part of your body and your upper limbs.
Upper limbs: This includes bones of the arms and hands. The function of your u pper limbs is to
move the hand around the body during activities of life.
