ABSTRACT

Background: This paper discusses depression in older adults by exploring different types of

depressions and numbers of risk factors that make older adults more vulnerable to

depression as compared to the younger population. This paper has also explored the

understanding of different social work practitioners working in different settings with older

people suffering from depression, with an aim of finding the answers to the research

question.

Method: The semi-systematic literature review is conducted on the secondary data

collected from both quantitative and qualitative sources using a mixed-method approach.

Six (6) peer-reviewed articles containing empirical and theoretical work are reviewed,

evaluated, and analysed as part of this paper. I completed secondary data analysis of the

selected literature in search of identifying relevant themes to report the findings.

Findings: The findings suggest that understanding the aetiology of depression and

depressive symptoms in older adults is a complex phenomenon because of the existence of

multiple risk factors. This complexity also influences the diagnosis and treatment of this

mental disorder among elderlies. This study also highlights that it is vital for social workers

to understand the social implication of depression in older adults to promote social change

and to follow an anti-discriminatory and an evidence-based model of practice.
