UNIT 1 – INVESTIGATING TRAVEL AND TOURISM By Ciar

P4 – SUMMARISE KEY DEVELOPMENTS (FROM THE 1960’S ONWARDS) THAT
HAVE SHAPED THE PRESENT DAY TRAVEL AND TOURISM SECTOR

, KEY DEVELOPMENTS FROM THE 1960’S TO THE
PRESENT DAY
❖ Travel and Tourism has been around for lots of years. 150 years ago in Victorian times it would
only be the rich families who could afford to take holidays in Europe. Because of how things have
changed, it is not just rich people who can afford to take holidays. Any body can take a holiday,
just as long as they have a little bit of cash saved up.
❖ In the 17th and 18th Century young English elites would spend 2-4 years travelling around Europe
to learn about architecture, geography, language and culture. This was known as The Grand Tour.
This happens now in the present day. Students from schools, colleges and university's will visit
countries abroad to learn.
❖Doctors discovered that the sea was good for peoples health, therefore people wanted to visit
coastal resorts in the UK such as Blackpool.
❖It was the 1930’s and after the 2nd World War that the Travel and Tourism Industry took off
because of the increase of the amount of pilots and planes. It was in 1938 that the Holiday Pay
Act was introduced. This allowed working class employees to have a week paid holiday.
❖Billy Butlin introduced Butlin's holidays which allowed people who earnt an average wage. Also
Vladmir Raitz and Thomas Cook introduced package holidays
