Unit 1: Changing awareness of Crime

AC3.1

My campaign is based on raising awareness of the domestic abuse of males and ways to help men feel more
comfortable about talking about their experiences. This is because the majority of people have an ideology that all
domestic abuse victims are women, when this is not always the case. This is shown in the brief as Mr Jones is being
domestically abused by his wife but covers it up when he must go to the hospital to receive treatment for the
wounds his wife has caused him. Not enough is being done to stop domestic abuse against men and to make them
feel more comfortable about coming forward about it. Therefore, the aims of my campaign are to increase the
number of male victims that report their experiences of domestic abuse and to decrease the stigma of male
domestic abuse victims being seen as weak due to societies ridiculous standards. In order to achieve these aims I
have set out three objectives to complete the first one being getting my twitter following to 250,000. My next
objective would be to gain a high-profile male celebrity ambassador that a lot of young males look up to and see as a
role model. Finally, my last objective is to sell 1,000 pieces of merchandise by the end of 2021.

This campaign is vital as domestic abuse against men is extremely dangerous as not may feel confident enough to
report dues to many reasons such as shame and fear of what people may think of them. Only around 51% of male
victims of domestic abuse tell anyone which is three times less likely than females, this creates danger for males in
these situations as they may be in life threatening situations but feel too ashamed to admit it to anyone as they are
afraid as being labelled as ‘weak’. Something must be done in order to make men feel more at ease about coming
forward about what they are experiencing, and my campaign is the perfect way to do that. Another reason why this
campaign is vital is the majority of people believe that it is a lot more likely for a female to be abused when in actual
fact it is close to being equal chances with 2.5% of men being victims of domestic abuse compared to 4.85 of women
being victims. There must be a change in attitude towards abuse as people push the possibility of males being
abused to the side as they are seen as being the more dominant one when this is not always the case. If nothing is
done about this males will have to continue to live in constant fear of being seen as weak and pathetic if they admit
to being abused putting them in extreme danger.

My campaigns target audience will be teenagers and young adults. I have chosen this age group as they are the most
vulnerable age group to domestic violence with men aged between 16 and 24 being found to be the most vulnerable
to domestic abuse in 2018. The campaign being aimed at that age group allows victims to be raised aware on how to
come forward and reassures them that it is not embarrassing to do so. This age especially is one that fears
judgement the most as they are in a vulnerable stage of their life where everyone’s opinion effects them, so to that
age group coming forward about domestic abuse is even harder especially because of social media being rife in that
age category making it easier for people to give a hateful opinion on you. Furthermore, I have chosen this age group
as even if they are not abused they are still at an age where they can be easily influenced so if we start by eradicating
the toxic masculinity from this age it is a lot easier than reversing bad habits. It will cause the next generation to
group with a completely different view on men, making it easier for them to come forward and for crime to be
resolved.

One of the methods I have decided to use in my campaign is social media. I have chosen to use social media as it will
be effective due to my target audience being teenagers and young adults. This is because around 97% of people
aged between 16-24 have their own social media profile so it is a great way to grab my target audience’s attention
and reach as many people as possible. Also using social media is free so is very cost effective and I will not have to
worry about funding the campaigns use of social media, meaning more money can go towards other methods and
the campaign itself. Also, it is a great way to get more people involved as when people become interested, they are
able to share it themselves to their friends, so they get involved also. This is a great way to gain attention as people
are more likely to get involved and share if they see other people doing it also as it becomes “trendy”. Furthermore,
social media makes it easy for people to get involved in a quick and easy way that stops it from being time
consuming so it doesn’t off put people who are at work, college or university so have busy schedules.

Another method I’m going to be using to spread awareness of my campaign is merchandise. I am going to create
custom phone cases as around 93% of young people own a phone so it would be very appealing for them. Creating a

, Unit 1: Changing awareness of Crime

fun, trendy phone case is an easy way to gain donations of people in a way where both parties gain something
useful. I chose a phone case as I feel it is more appealing than a t-shirt or other items as people may feel too
embarrassed to wear a campaign t-shirt so it will put them off buying it as they see it as a waste of money, whereas a
phone case is trendy and is something that the customer will never take off their phone whereas a t-shirt can only be
worn once before washing and cannot be used constantly so won’t spread awareness as consistently as a phone
would. In order to fund the creation of my merchandise I will do local fundraisers such as car washes and bake sales
in order to gain enough money to make the products. The website I will use to make my products is prodigi.com
where each phone case is £10 each to buy.

Finally, the last method I will be using is posters. Posters can easily be made to be eye-catching but also informative
to gain peoples attention. They can also be placed in effective locations for example around schools, universities and
even places such as shopping centres and football stadiums where my target audience spend a lot of time and are
more likely to see the posters. They are also quite cost effective as they will only be used in my local areas and for
example at vistaprint.com they sell 1000 A3 posters for £57.99.

Below I have included a rough idea on how ii will manage my time when setting up my campaign. During week one I
will spend my time doing research into domestic violence to make sure I have enough information to start my
campaign and also putting together my team. Then in week two I will be meeting up with my selected team and
discussing job roles. In week three I will then start making designs for my logo. Week four I will start designing my
merch and then week five I will design the layout of my social media and poster. Week six I will send my designs to
Vistaprint and prodigi and during week seven I will create my social media page. Then in week eight I will start to sell
my merchandise and finally in week nine I will begin to operate my social media page and stick my posters up in my
chosen areas.
