P1 - Asthma is a physiological disorder which is known to be a common lung disease that
causes breathing difficulties, which has an effect on your health. In asthma, an individual's
airways will swell, and may produce mucus, which causes you lungs to become congested
and lack oxygen.
'Airways become tighter when an individual breathes, making wheezing noises when they
exhale'.
Some asthmatics suffer a minor inconvenience, while others have a life threatening condition
that interferes with daily activities.
Causes
There are many causes of asthma, but the exact cause is unknown. Genetics is a possible
cause of asthma, as it may be a physiological disorder inherited from family members.
Individuals with atopic conditions like food allergies, eczema or who suffer from hay fever are
most likely to get asthma. 'It could also be exposure to Tabasco smoke as a child, or when a
mother has been smoking during pregnancy which may cause it'.
Medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen can trigger asthma.
Infections such as flu or cold are known to trigger this physiological disorder, as well as with
individuals who have allergies, such as to dust mites, animal fur or pollution, then it may
trigger their asthma.
Most common cause will be exercise as it does affect their breathing which may lead to an
asthma attack in worse case scenarios.
M1 - Analyse the changes in the body systems and function
Asthma causes changes in the body system as it is a long term disorder which affects the
airways in the lungs. Having asthma can have an impact on the airways as it can become
narrowed or inflamed.
As constant coughing and difficulties in breathing are symptoms of asthma, this can also
affect the windpipe which is dangerous as it is known to be a muscle that has a role in
delivering oxygen to your lungs. As it can affect the windpipe, it can cause the airway to
become inflamed, affecting the body systems.
, Asthma can also affect individuals organs that rely on oxygen causing damage to your body
system and how it functions. ‘An increase in mucus secretions from the mucous membrane
may further aggravate these changes, causing a narrowing of the airways.’ Asthma can
affect your physical health as when you are short in breath, you will start making wheezing
sounds, or may start coughing due to your airways swelling up. Asthma can affect you
physically as it can cause exhaustion, fast heartbeat and may even cause you to faint due to
drowsiness.
D1 - A common physical effect in asthma would be being too breathless as many
individuals suffer from that which has a huge impact on their physical well being. This can
get worse causing an uncomfortable feeling and can also lead to an asthma attack if the
breathing gets worse.
Chest tightness can also affect an individual’s physical health as it links in with not being
able to breathe comfortably due to their asthma getting worse. Shortness in breath can
cause constant coughs, trouble breathing when lying down and causing you to have high
fever.
Some individuals may not be able to do certain exercises as it can lead to them having an
asthma attack because of their lungs becoming inflamed which has an impact on them
socially.
‘Approximately 90% of asthmatics suffer from exercise-induced bronchoconstriction’.
One uncommon physical effect in asthma can be taking quick breaths as most individuals
who suffer from asthma are most likely to have problems in breathing which is the opposite.
Another physical effect can be experiencing insomnia which can lead to feeling fatigue and
tiredness during the day.
