Eliot Hunter (ID: 16002495) Assignment C Unit 08 E-Commerce

E-Commerce

Explain the potential risks to an organisation of
committing to an e-commerce system.
Identity Theft
This is where someone has used someone else’s personal details (bank account, phone number,
name, address etc.) for another website. This is very commonly done. Many people in the world will
enter their personal details into a website thinking it is safe, where in fact, it’s quite the opposite.
People who use Identity Theft to get things will typically use Trojan’s to gain other people’s
information. Fraud is like identity Theft.

Viruses
These Viruses can be extremely malicious to a system. They are specifically designed to harm/break
something. Viruses can be hidden inside files that are safe to download from a website and can be
sent via email. Viruses can do very little damage such as deleting a certain file or they can become so
dangerous that they will destroy a computer. A user can typically identify when they have a virus if
the computer is acting slow since Viruses can use up a lot of the RAM and CPU power.

Hacking
This is something where human or machine can gain access to another device whether it be a mobile
phone, personal computer, tablet etc. And this of course is unauthorised, it is most commonly done
to steal personal data that are on the device such as financial details. Hackers also hack into devices
to download viruses/Trojans as well. Commonly, the hackers will use this required data for things like
Fraud and Identity Theft. It is extremely important that users and companies keep the data,
especially important, safe to prevent this from happening.

Discuss how security issues in e-commerce can
be overcome.
Firewalls
A security system (firewall) is something which designed to prevent unauthorised access which the
computer doesn’t recognize. A firewall can be both software and hardware. The difference between
the software and hardware is that the software firewalls are programs that can be downloaded/ built
into the computer where as hardware firewalls are part of routers. The firewalls can be configured to
what it allows through and what it does not by the user of the computer. Firewalls can allow or deny
network transmissions which can be based of the user’s set of rules for the firewalls. Firewalls can
deny most viruses to gain access to your computer resulting in a safer PC.

Strong Passwords
Many websites ask the users signing up to create a strong password to prevent hackers from gaining
access. This also means that the password that is created is protecting your personal data. To create
the strongest password, it is advised to use a difference of characters such as symbols, numbers,
upper case letter. This is because that they will be the hardest to guess for hackers.
