INTRODUCTION
The story begins in the spring of 1945, with an eleven-year-old German boy
named Helmuth overhearing his parents discussing a grave matter.
Helmuth's father, a prominent physician, contemplated killing the entire family or
committing suicide due to fear of revenge by the Allies for Nazi actions.
Helmuth's father had been a supporter of Adolf Hitler and a Nazi.
Hitler and his inner circle, including his propaganda minister Goebbels, committed
suicide collectively in April 1945 as Germany surrendered to the Allies.
After the war, the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg was established to
prosecute Nazi war criminals for Crimes against Peace, War Crimes, and Crimes Against
Humanity.
Germany's conduct during the war included genocidal actions that resulted in the mass
murder of various groups, including Jews, Gypsies, Polish civilians, and the mentally and
physically disabled.
