UNIT 2 – LEADERSHIP AND TEAMWORK

The task I was leading was called the marble run. Obviously my role for this certain task was to be the
team leader where I had to control the team, give roles out that would suit that person and more. In
this task, I was a leader of around about 11 people (about half of the class). In this task I was given a
sheet that briefed me on everything I needed to know about the task. I didn’t have long to read
through it before I had to tell my team what exactly we needed to do. This task was about getting a
marble form one side to the other without it touching the floor. I was only given a certain amount of
components to work with and make up a route for the marble. We were given selected time limits
for planning we had 10 minutes and 20 minutes to actually do it. When being a leader of a big group
I knew I needed to use the best skills and qualities I know that would help me out when trying to talk
or control them all. The most important skill was communication, teamwork and more. At the start of
the task, I thought I was confident in leading the group, I thought I would be able to remember all
the skills I needed to use when being a leader. After a while when we got into the task, I became very
nervous, I wasn’t confident and I forgot about all the skills I needed for a leader. This made the task
very difficult for me because not all of my team were listening to me but having their own
conversation. So I tried to overcome this problem they splitting them up and make them get involved
but this did not work. Throughout the task not everything was bad. In some areas, I believe I was
effective for some individuals in the team. In some areas my communication was very good, this is
because I had a small group around me which made it easier because I wasn’t having to shout but I
was clear on my words so everyone could understand me. I delegated roles to everyone. These roles
were things such as keeping check of the time, getting the equipment laid out so we knew what we
had or even planning. Another thing I thought I did effectively when leading my group was by
listening to what people had to say on what they thought would be the best plan to go with. I
encouraged everyone in the team to get involved and give ideas. In some parts I thought I was an
effective team leader but overall I didn’t think I was that effective for a big group like I had.

This was the first time I’ve ever lead a group this big, so I was very nervous being the leader for a
large amount of people because I didn’t want to let the team down or mess up and loss the task
because of my mistakes. Throughout the task there were many positive and negatives things about
me and my team’s performance.

There were a few good things about myself when leading this task. I believe that I was successful
when communicating to individuals; this is because I was loud and clear for them to hear me and
understand me. This made them get on the task knowing what to do. I realised at the start the noise
was too loud in the room which made it hard to let everyone hear me. I overcame this problem by
talking in smaller groups. Another thing that went well during this task about my performance was
coming up with plans. I got everyone to say what they think would be a good idea and I gathered all
the ideas and came up with one finally plan by putting everyone’s opinions into it. I thought this
would be more effective. A positive thing about my performance was I gave out roles quickly for
everyone and gave the best roles for each person. Throughout the task I believe in some places my
performance was very effective.
