Unit 3 Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services
Media Transcript
Due: 17.06.16
The public services are portrayed in a variety of ways through the
media depending on the situation they find themselves in and the
ways in which it is dealt with and also the type of media doing the
reporting. They can be reported in many ways, such as; newspapers,
magazines, television, radio, internet, books, journal articles and
service magazines. The coverage can be factual or a fictional
portrayal. A factual coverage is them highlighting real members of
the public services performing their job which they have been
employed to do. A fictional portrayal may not be based on the real
experience of most public service workers and may differ from the
actual work they do. These are some examples of how the media
have portrayed the public services in different situations.
Article one is a newspaper report in the Sun newspaper, it was about
a soldier who was killed in the town centre in wales. There were a
few national issues which were covered in the article such as;
murder and how the case was dealt with and also a brief overlook of
extremism and if it was the motive behind the murder. The public
services would be effected by this case because it takes a lot of time
and money to investigate as there are any procedures they have to
follow in these circumstances. Not only would the police be
investigating the case but so would the Army as they need justice
and answers for the family of the soldier who was still currently
serving in the forces. This article could be interpreted by the
citizens, the main one being fear. If a trained soldier cannot defend
himself against the attack then neither could anyone, the public
would start to feel unsafe in their homes and in the community,
especially as it is a soldiers duty to protect their country.
The report was not front page news it was based in the middle of the
paper with only brief details which meant that it was not a large
investigation and it happened in a small place. The soldier who was
killed was not named, this could have been for many reasons such
as he has not yet been identified/ the family did not agree to have
his name mentioned or for purposes of the investigation. The writer
of the article also did not include how they felt about the article or
quotes from other people about their thoughts and feelings. The only
