Unit 16 – Passenger Transport
M2 – Explain how UK passenger transport networks work with travel and tourism component
industries
In this assignment I will be explaining how UK passenger transport networks work with travel and tourism
component industries.
The rail company Virgin Trains have a very good relationship with the tour operator Superbreaks. As
mentioned in P3, they have a contractual relationship with Superbreaks. When booking a package holiday
through Superbreaks you can save up to 50% or more on return rail. By having a contract with each other
means that Superbreaks are able to give customers discount on rail because Virgin have given them
permission to sell tickets at a cheap price. Not only does this save the customer money, it also means that
both Superbreaks and Virgin Trains are receiving income as well. I had a look at rail and hotel package and
here’s what I found. Departing from London Kings Cross and Arriving at Edinburgh Waverley, staying in a
3* hotel called Travel Lodge Edinburgh Central costs £380 for 2 people. I think that this would be a lot
more expensive for the customers to book it separately.
The Ferry company Red Funnel have a relationship with the regulatory body ABTA (Association of British
Travel Agents). Red Funnel are a member of the ABTA UK Tourism and Leisure Committee. The reason why
this relationship exists is because by being part of ABTA means that they are protected financially should
anything go wrong and so that customers can trust them. In the unlikely event Brittany Ferries goes out of
business, ABTA have a quick, clear and simple process for customers to follow, this will allow them to
continue their holiday as planned or get your money back. By being a member of ABTA means that
customers have reassurance and confidence when booking through Brittany Ferries. If there are delays
then the customers have right to accommodation. If the sailing you are booked on is cancelled, and
dependent upon the circumstances, you may be entitled to free of charge accommodation until an
alternative sailing is arranged. Arrangements will need to be made for suitable accommodation ashore. In
these cases the total accommodation cost is limited to a maximum of €80 per person per night for a
maximum of 3 nights.
The River Bus Company Thames Clippers have a relationship with the tourist attraction The O2 Arena.
They promote each others service. So Thames Clippers do a river bus service to the O2 Arena, and the O2
Arena will promote the river bus service as a way of getting there. The do a river bus express ticket which
allows customers to Travel in style to events at The O2 with this fast, dedicated River Bus Express service.
Travel from London Eye or London Bridge to North Greenwich Pier for The O2 in under 35 minutes. Avoid
the crowds post show and hop on board, boats depart 15-20 minutes after the event finishes. Customers
can also upgrade to a VIP Champagne ticket to add that touch of sparkle to the night. To go to the Justin
Bieber concert on the 11th of October return costs approx. £13 return or for the VIP return it costs approx.
£21. Departing from the London Eye and London Bridge are currently sold out for Justin Bieber. Because of
this event that is going on at the O2 it has resulted in the Thames Clipper service to be fully booked! The
reason why they have a relationship is so that it gains them both customers by working together. Lots of
people will want to go to the O2 to see Justin Bieber and also will need a way of getting there. By promoting
they will help each other out. Instead of seeing themselves as competitors they work together and
sometimes two is stronger than one.
The coach company Shearings have a joint ownership with their own accommodation. The reason why
they have a relationship is because not only do they own their own coach service they also own their own
hotels. This means that customers can book a package holiday all in one place. The other reason behind it is
because it generates them more income. They will not have to share the profit with anyone else, all the
