Unit 7 – European Destinations
M1 – Explain how selected holidays meet specific motivations
In this assignment I will be selecting one holiday from each motivation and I will explain
how it best meets the brief.
Firstly I will be looking at the couple who are celebrating their silver wedding
anniversary. I think that Florence would suit them best rather than Barcelona for a
number of reasons.
The first reason is I found that most of Barcelona art galleries mainly consisted of
contemporary art and that everything was quite modern. There is the Barcelona
Museum of Contemporary Art which has a permanent collection of around 5,000 works.
This is from the mid-20th century onward. Other art galleries which offer contemporary
art are the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Fundació Mapfre, Centre de Cultura Contemporània
de Barcelona, Fundació Suñol and the Fundació Joan Miró. I also found that there wasn’t
much famous art work other than Picasso. However Florence is home to the world’s
most famous art gallery the Uffizi has lots of old work dating from the 12th – 17th
century. The gallery also has lots of famous work from great Italian artists such as
Botticelli, Giotto, Cimabue, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Raffaello. I think that
the couple would appreciate art from different periods as they might be interested in
the heritage of art and how far it goes back. It’s also nice to see famous artists. I also
think that the couple might not want to pay for 6 art galleries in Barcelona which offer
the same sort of style of art.
The second reason is that the hotel was a lot nicer and had more facilities in Florence.
The Villa Medici is an 18th-century villa surrounded by gardens. It is also a 20 minute
walk from the Uffizi gallery. Some rooms have their own private Jacuzzi. The room
which they will be staying in overlook the enchanting gardens with the swimming pool
or the park of the internal convent. They consist of a bedroom, a large living room and
Carrara marble bathroom. They are furnished with antiques and can have a king-sized
or twin beds. Here are other facilities in the room.
