Methods and techniques for leadership
P1 – Describe the different leadership styles used in the public service.
M1 – Compare the different leadership styles used in the public service.
D1 – Evaluate the effectiveness of the different leadership styles used in the public services.
In this assignment I will describe and compare the different leadership styles used in the
public services and evaluate their effectiveness as well as identifying the role of a team
leader in the public services.
The public services would not be able to operate efficiently if it wasn’t for leadership and
teamwork, many leaders within the public services adopt different leadership styles
depending on their role.
In a public service such as the army, officers would need to take an authoritarian approach
towards most situations. Authoritarian leadership is where a team leader takes control of all
decisions without input from any of their group members. This style can only be used if you
have all the information to carry out the task and all members are well motivated or you are
on a tight deadline. This approach is very useful for the army as officers are able to make
quick, effective decisions if their team is, for example under fire on a battlefield.
Authoritarian leadership is the most effective style as it makes the chain of command more
defined, only one person is taking charge so there is no confusion and tasks will be
completed more efficiently. The only drawbacks for this leadership style is that conflict can
develop if subordinates do not agree with their leader so they become less motivated or
interested in the task.
Transactional Leadership uses rewards and punishments to motivate the team. This style is
similar to Autocratic leadership just not as extreme. Leaders which adopt both of these
styles have very similar characteristics, for example they are both direct and dominant and
give clear expectations of what they want from the team. This leadership can be used Royal
Navy, if orders are followed and you are committed to the service rewards like pay rises or
promotions are usually given, yet if they are disobeyed this can lead to demotions, or
dishonourable discharge or in extreme cases military imprisonment. Transactional leadership
is an effective style as team members feel like they are gaining something for their hard
work, this leads to increased motivation to get the work done on time and to a high
standard. Subordinates under this style benefit as there is a clear structure of who is in
charge and what is expected from them. A disadvantage of this leadership style is that it only
benefits those on the lower levels or ranks, those who are higher in the chain of command
will not see the benefits of moving up the ranks as they have already gained that reward.
