Human teeth have many parts, such as enamel, dentine, pulp, root
canal, etc.
Before knowing of how to deal with forensic odontology and its
associated forensic science, we must know the morphological and
structural features of a tooth.
,TOOTH STRUCTURE:
A tooth is divided into three main parts: the crown area, root area,
and neck area.
The crown area is the part above the gum line.
The root area is the lower portion below the gum line.
The neck area is the area between the crown and the root.
ENAMEL:
Enamel is the hardest part of our body and is the most
mineralized body part.
It is made up of 90% minerals, with water and organic material
making up the remaining 10%.
Enamel covers the crown of the tooth and is the visible part.
It has its origin from the ectoderm germ layer and varies in
color from light yellow to grayish white.
The thickness of enamel varies over the surface of the tooth,
being thickest at the cusp area and thinnest at the border.
The wear rate of enamel is known as attrition, and its primary
mineral is hydroxyapatite, which is crystalline calcium
phosphate.
, The basic unit of enamel is called an enamel rod.
The arrangement of the crystallites within each enamel rod is
highly complex.
Both ameloblasts (the cells which initiate enamel formation)
and Tomes processes affect the crystallites pattern.
Enamel crystallites in the head of the enamel rod are oriented
parallel to the long axis of the rod.
When found in the tail of the enamel rod, the crystallites
orientation diverges slightly (65 degrees) from the long axis.
The area around the enamel rod is known as interrod enamel.
Interrod enamel has the same composition as enamel rod,
however a histologic distinction is made between the two
because crystallite orientation is different in each.
