A Guide to Safeguarding

This guide is for members of staff in the health and social care sector, and
staff in the NHS. Safeguarding means to keep service users safe more
efficiently through policies and procedures set out by the organisation.
According to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) (2022) “Safeguarding
means protecting people's health, wellbeing and human rights”. This allows
staff to be able to keep people safe, but also know how to keep people
safe. This is important as it makes the service user feels much more
comfortable with your services and allows them to trust us more easily.
According to the National Health Service (NHS) (2023) “It is an integral
part of providing high-quality health care. Safeguarding children, young
people and adults is a collective responsibility”. Safeguarding is also
important due to the fact it assures our patient they won’t be taken
advantage of no matter how vulnerable they are. There are six main
principles in safeguarding. They are empowerment, prevention,
protection, partnership, accountability and proportionality. These
principles are in place to set in stone the behaviours and rules that are
involved in safeguarding. According to the Social Care Institute for
Excellence (SCIE) (2023) “First introduced by the Department of Health in
2011, but now embedded in the Care Act, these six principles apply to all
health and care settings”. Due to this, these principles should not only be
used to adhere to safeguarding, but also in other sectors of health and
social care.
