Assignment 1: nutritional concepts and characteristics of nutrients

P1: EXPLAIN THE CONECEPTS ASSOCIATED WITH NUTRITIONAL HEALTH

In this assignment I will be explaining the concepts of nutritional
health including key terms like what nutritional measures and
dietary guidelines could be used to identify a person who was
malnourished, undernourished, and deficient in certain
nutrients, overweight or obese. I will also be explaining what
dietary guidelines there are that help individuals have a
balanced diet.

There are many different key terms associated with nutritional health. For example, one
concept would be dietary intake. One type of promotion for dietary intake is called the 5-A-
DAY campaign. This campaign is the best known government health message across the
nation and it was started due to a wide spread
worry about health issues. However, even
though this campaign is thoroughly promoted,
people still on average are only eating three

day. An advantage with eating a high amount
of fruit and vegetable is that it reduces the risk
of heart disease and cancer. Unfortunately, this
campaign was not listened to by everyone. According to many sources, the middle-class took
action of this campaign more than lower classes. This is due to the fact that if someone is
from a poor background fruit and vegetables are usually not in their daily intake. This is for
reasons like being too expensive, lack of knowledge on what to buy etc. Therefore this
campaign is shown to be less successful in disadvantaged communities to the government’s
disappointment.

Another concept of keeping up with
nutritional health would be the eat well
plate. This is a pictorial food guide showing
the proportion and types of foods that are
needed to make up a healthy, varied and
balanced diet. The eat well pate is based on
the government’s tips for eating well which
include advice like: base your meals on
starchy foods, eat lots of fruit and
vegetables, eat more fish, cut down on
saturated fat and sugar, try to eat less salt,
get active, drink plenty of water and don’t skip breakfast. This plate applies to all people,
including vegetarians, people of all ethnic origins, people who are a healthy weight for their
height as well as people who are overweight. The eat well plate exaggerates on the fact that
healthy eating is all about balance and that there are no good or bad foods as long as the
