Explain how woodland management techniques have been or are currently employed in your locality, region or nation.
Relate each of them to the concept of sustainability and to what extent they provide opportunities to contribute to this.
Unit 1 4.1 Understand the management of woodlands as a sustainable learning environment.
Explain the sustainability of current and historic woodland management techniques in own
location.
I’m currently working in Germany and do not speak enough German to interact with the German
forest workers. When I return to the UK I will either be based in Yorkshire or Devon, therefore I am
not able to physically access a UK woodland but have decided to broadly consider woodland areas in
general around Devon as this will be more beneficial for my portfolio upon my return to the UK.
Whilst living in Bavaria I have observed the great care that woodland staff take of the surrounding,
mostly coniferous, woodland areas. Trees adorn the hillsides here and are managed to ensure any
damage caused by heavy winds and storms is removed so as not to further damage the trees that
are left standing or cause erosion. (I’ve recently observed coppicing in the woodland here in Bavaria)
Explain how woodland management techniques have been or are currently employed in
your locality, region, or nation.
The following table lists some of the types of woodland management techniques (Please refer
to the Powerpoint for more details on periods of management, how to carry out the
techniques, and how it may affect the woodland)
Woodland Management Technique Illustration
Coppicing - the cutting of trees close to
the ground to encourage new stems to
develop quickly, ready to be eventually
recut.
Sustainable as it promotes vigorous re-
growth and a sustainable supply of
timber for future generations.
Pollarding – Upper branches are
removed from the trunk to promote
dense regrowth on pollarded trees.
Sustainable in that it enables underbrush
growth due to increased light reaching
the woodland floor, which in turn can
increase species diversity.
